Example of using a subordinating conjunction (does not require both joining clauses to be
independent sentences):

go, went, is
Why: “go, went, is” are verbs because they are action verbs.
Exercise 2 correct answers
: “nice, good, pretty”
Why: Because “nice, good, pretty” modifies the verb.
Exercise 3 correct answer
: There is no adverb.
Why: The word “very” might feel like it should be an adverb, but it modifies the word “nice”
which is not a verb so very is not an adverb.

: Australians, cats, dogs, oranges, island
Explanation: These are things.
Exercise 5 correct answer

Why: These are specific things.

Why: The “boss” is the word that the verb applies to.

Why: You can’t connect two clauses (two parts) of a sentence with that word

Why: The word “but would connect the two sentences to have them make logical and
grammatical sense.

: These are the coordinating conjunctions (connect two small
sentences into one big sentence while keeping it grammatically correct): For, and, nor, but,
or, yet, so
Example of using a coordinating conjunction: I have learned a lot but I want to learn more.
Why: “I have learned a lot” and “I want to learn more” can be sentences that stand on their
own. So we connect it by a coordinating conjunction.
Exercise 11 correct answer
: I like this job because of my boss.
Why: “my boss” could not be an independent sentence and only “I like this job” could be an
independent sentence so we connect it by a subordinating conjunction which is “because of”
