Knowledge-based economy An expression coined to describe trends in advanced economies towards greater dependence on knowledge, information and high skill levels, and the increasing need for ready access to all of these by the business and public sectors. (Source:OECD 2008).
	Knowledge society According to UNESCO, knowledge societies are about capabilities to identify, produce, process, transform, disseminate and use information to build and apply knowledge for human development. They require an empowering social vision that encompasses plurality, inclusion, solidarity and participation. (Source: UNESCO 2005b). The need for continuous learning is a general characteristic of the knowledge society and the capacity for each individual to learn throughout life is crucial.
	knowledge transfer (or knowledge exchange) Applying the results or outcomes of higher education research activities so as to benefit wider society and the economy. This could be through the development of commercial applications or by contributing to the effectiveness of public services for example. These activities may be undertaken through ‘knowledge transfer partnerships’ (KTPs).
