How far would it travel? The wave would have enough energy to cross the entire Atlantic Ocean. Eight hours after the eruption it would smash into the east coast of America. It would still be about 30 meters high. Boston would be hit first, followed by New York, then the coast down to Miami. The wave woild create havoc in the Caribbean and Brazil too. It would travel for several kilometers inland because of the low coastline. It would flatten everything and kill thousands of people.

What can we do about it? Nothing much, it seems. The scientists believe that it is not a question of if, but when. The volcano will collapse at some time in the future, but it could be hundreds or thousands of years from now. Furthermore, if only part of the volcano plunged into the sea, the tsunami would be much smaller. Scientists want to put better equipment on CumbreVieja, so that they can predict the volcano’s eruptions in the future and give us an early warning of possible problems. Although nobody
could stop the tsunami, at least the authorities could then evacuate the towns and cities that would be in danger and save thousands of lives.

Water throwing festival.If you are visiting Thailand in April, it might be a good idea to take an umbrella with you. Why? Well, although April is the hottest month in Thailand, it is also when Thais, on 13 April, celebrate New Year. How do they celebrate it? By dousing people with water! Originally the Thais gently poured water over each other’s hands as a sign of respect. This then developed into young people throwing water at each other to relieve the heat. Today, however, young people run or drive through the streets with buckets of water or enormous water guns and throw water at anybody they see. So, if you don’t want to get soaked, don’t stand in the street. Fortunately, there are some rules. Firstly, participants mustn’t throw water at elderly people. Secondly, they mustn’t touch people. Thirdly, they mustn’t throw water at car drivers. Every year people get killed or injured in road accidents during the festival and some people want to ban it.
