Linking words 
When we talk about 
linking words
 we are referring to words that show how ideas within and 
between sentences are related. These also give coherency to your writing. 
The two types of linking words are 
conjunctions
 and 
transitions
.  
Examples of conjunctions: 
Children are eating more junk food, 
so
 obesity is becoming a major problem. 
Although
 
the government is promoting healthy living, illnesses are increasing. 
Obesity is becoming a major problem 
because
 children are eating more junk food. 
There are many types of conjunctions with different purposes so there is not the space to 
cover them all here, but we’ll look at some of the most important ones that you will use in 
your writing.

Transitions usually start the sentence and are followed by a comma. Examples of transitions: 
More children are getting diseases. 
For example
, since 1996 the number of people 
diagnosed with diabetes has increased from 1.4 million to 2.9 million. 
Children are eating more junk food. 
As a result
, obesity is becoming a major 
problem. 
The government is trying to promote healthy living. 
However
, children still eat far too 
much junk food.
