I am not an art expert so I won't be able to tell you about famous sculptures like The
Thinker
or the Statue of David
,
but I will try to describe the Terra-
Cotta Warriors in Xi’an. This place has
become one of the most popular tourist destinations in China.
The story goes that the Emperor Qin Shi Huang was afraid of dying. As a result, he decided to
surround his mausoleum with replicas
(=
copies) of his army. He had up to 7000 statues of Chinese
soldiers and horses created and today you can still see most of them.
Each statue was handmade and great attention was paid to details
.
Actually,
every single
warrior has a different facial expression and hairstyle. I can't imagine how much time it took for the
artists to create all of them. What is even more surprising is that they are all life-sized statues.
Twenty years ago, all of them were still buried, but some farmers found some pottery as they
were digging a well, which attracted archaeologists' attention.
There are probably hundreds more statues still buried around. I have seen pictures and it looks
like a gigantic pit
(
hole excavation). The site is most impressive. I have never been there, but I
believe that the visit must be worth
the long trip
.
