22- Some people believe the government must ban dangerous sports
such as boxing or motor-racing, others believe people must have the
right to play these sports.
Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Millions of people play sports every day, and, inevitably, some suffer injury or
pain. Most players and spectators accept this risk. However, some people
would like to see dangerous sports such as boxing banned.
Some sports are nothing but an excuse for violence. Boxing is a perfect
example. The last thing an increasingly violent world needs is more violence
on our television. The sight of two men (or even women) bleeding, with faces
ripped open, trying to obliterate each other is barbaric. Other sports, such as
American football or rugby, are also barely-concealed violence. Some people
argue that the players can choose to participate. However this is not always
the case. Many boxers, for example, come from disadvantaged backgrounds.
They are lured by money or by social or peer pressure and then cannot
escape. Even in richer social groups, schools force unwilling students to play
aggressive team sports, claiming that playing will improve the students'
character (or the school's reputation).
However, many would not opt for the illegalization of violent sports. They
believe, being a couch potato and growing obese has certainly more risk for
the person than participating in some violent sport competitions. As many
people choose to turn into slothful people suffering from a wide range of
chronic diseases caused by obesity such as cardiovascular diseases and
diabetes; for justice to prevail, athletes must be given the freedom to choose
their favorite field of sport. As we never prevent the lazy from getting obese in
spite of the health risks involved, we should not boycott some sports for the
violence they may contain.
In conclusion, I believe banning a certain sport immediately after we discover
it is dangerous is not a practical solution. Some sports are really very
interesting and popular. I believe we can have a new version of some sports.
Most sports can be moderated by setting some new rules and regulations; for
instance, experts have already changed most of the rules and regulations in
boxing and now the new form is approved of by many countries.
