How are language and culture connected?
Well, language is one aspect of culture, along with things like the arts, festivals, and local history. Language is used to describe culture, and it is very difficult to talk about a country's culture without using the local language. For example, in China, it is very complex to explain a legend in another language, because the names of the characters and the place shave a special cultural meaning in Chinese. We always say that you can't fully understand Chinese culture if you don't speak the language. In my English class, my teacher used English to describe life in America. For example, he taught me the word "prom," the night when the senior-high-school students dress up and go dancing to celebrate the end of the school year. Here, we don't have a word to translate "prom" in Chinese. You can understand from examples like this that language and culture are very closely intertwined (= connected).
