TEXT С. NEW YORK TUNNELS
(1) Nowadays tunnels are built for various purposes. The dangers and difficulties encountered by pioneers do not exist today. The boring of modern tunnels is based on scientific methods. The work of tunnellers is greatly facili­tated by explosives suitable for every type of soil and machinery which ensures tunnel boring at a high rate.

(2) A considerable success has been achieved in tunnel construction in New York, USA. There are some places beneath the city where two or three tunnels cross each other at different levels to serve both road and rail traffic.

(3) The Hudson (['hΛdsn]) river flowing through the city remained unbridged for many miles. Plans to span it by a bridge seemed impracticable because the bridge would be so large that nobody dared to initiate its construction.

(4) Finally, most experts spoke in favour of tunnels. As a result, the mile-wide Hudson river is now crossed by two deep tunnels built in the modern manner. The schemes of these tunnels are similar.

(5) To maintain a continuous traffic and ensure safety of travel, the tunnels are patrolled by police who have telephone boxes at frequent intervals. If an accident hap­pens, warning is given at once for the repair workers.
