The values of HR
The most important aspect of values is the ethical
stance HR people take in promoting people man-
agement policies and practices that are just, fair
and take account of the interests of employees as
well as those of the business. The pressure on HR
practitioners in the private sector is to promote the
interests of the business and thus increase share-
holder value. In the public sector, the pressure is to
promote the aims of the organization. The problem
is that, as observed by Parkes and Davis (2013:
2413): ‘HR seems wedded to its allegiance to pro-
fitability and distancing itself from any connections
with welfare.’ They also note that: ‘The economic
drivers for organizations are important but the
danger of relying only on the business-case is that
ethics and responsibility become optional.’
