Rewarding directors and
senior executives
Probably no aspect of remuneration has attracted as
much attention recently as that of the pay of directors
and senior executives, especially since the 2008–09
banking crisis. Searching questions are being asked
frequently about the level of remuneration, the basis
upon which pay decisions are made, the conditions
for earning bonuses, and pension arrangements.
A leader in The Guardian (2012: 26) commented
that: ‘Top pay in America and Britain has gone from
being a question of how much bosses can earn, to
how much some can extract from their companies.’
