Choice of merit pay schemes
If a decision is made to go ahead with merit pay,
it should be based on an analysis of the features,
advantages, disadvantages and appropriateness of
the various schemes – shown in Table 27.3 – against
the criteria set out above.
Performance-related pay is the most popular
scheme. It was used by 84 per cent of the respond-
ents to the e-reward 2009 survey who had merit
pay. It was followed by contribution-related pay
(57 per cent), competency-related pay (33 per cent)
and skill-based pay (21 per cent).
