11. ABSTRACT

Contrastive analysis of Italian and Russian idiomatic expressions with a body part component

The subject of this thesis is contrastive analysis of Russian and Italian idiomatic expression that have body part components. The paper analyzes somatic component phrases, the so-called somatic phrases, which are defined as expressions that have at least one component of the human body. The visible organs are more represented in expression with body part components, therefore, this work is based on phrases that have head, eyes, arm, leg and heart as a constituent, heart being the only internal organ featured in the paper.

The paper is divided in two parts. The first deals with the theoretical framework that entails the definition of phraseology and idiomatic expression as well as their characteristics. The theoretical part is followed by the central part of the paper that includes contrastive analysis. For the purposes of analysis, 100 phrases were selected, i.e. 51 phrases with body part component in Russian, which were contrasted with 49 somatic phrases in Italian according to their phraseological meaning. The selected corpus was analyzed from the aspect of semantic and syntactic structure, their origin, form and style.
