Task 6. Read the text
Flower parts’
Flowering plants are the most numerous of all the divisions in the Plant Kingdom. The flowering plant has two major systems: a root system and a shoot system. The root system enables flowering plants to obtain water and nutrients from the soil. The shoot system allows plants to obtain food through photosynthesis and to reproduce. A flower is responsible for seed development and reproduction.
A complete flower has four basic parts:
Petals are colourful part of the flower. Petals collectively called the corolla. They are different in form and size. Their function is to attract insects and protect other flower parts within. The insects pick up the nectar, which is usually in the centre of a flower. They pick up pollen on their bodies and carry it to the next flower. Thus, insects pollinate flowers.
Sepals are special types of leaves. They form a ring around the outside of a flower bud. Their job is to protect the flower before it opens. Sepals are usually green. In some flowers, sepals are the same colour as the petals. After the flower has opened, the sepals can be seen behind the petals. Sepals collectively called the calyx.
Stamen is the male part of a flower. It makes pollen. Pollen is usually of yellow colour. Stamen has two parts: an anther and a filament. The anther produces and contains pollen. It is usually on the top of the filament. Filament holds up the anther.
Pistil is the female part of a flower. It has three parts: the stigma, the style and the ovary. Stigma is located in the centre of the flower and receives the pollen grains. Style is the long part of the pistil that leads to the ovary. Ovary usually at the bottom of the flower and contains ovules. Ovule is the part of the ovary that becomes the seeds.
In addition to the four basic parts, the complete flower has pedicel and receptacle. The pedicel, or the flower stalk, supports the flower. The enlarged part of the pedicel where it joins the flower is the receptacle.
So, remember: a flowering plant has both a root system for water and nutrition and a shoot system for reproduction and photosynthesis. A flower that has both male and female reproductive organs is referred to as a perfect flower.
