Epifane Gvenetadze
South Caucasus after Georgian Russian war
Summary
The research is about the creation of new realities in the world political space after the dismissal of The Soviet Union; particularly in the South Caucasus; region; where three new independent states were created. They are Georgia., Azerbaijan., and Armenia.; Georgia; takes the distinguished geopolitical; part.
It is well known, that specialists recognize two main tendencies in the South Caucasus: 1. regional.; scales of the security; and 2. Security of the borders.
After gaining independence Georgian external politics was directed to the West and it caused Russia’s furiosity. Russia activated its powerful arsenal, such as Abkhazian and Ossetian Separatism;
Ethno conflicts., of the 90s in the Georgian territory were run from Moscow. Though Abkhazian separatists got de-facto authority, no one recognized it de-jure.
The situation changed after the second half of the 2004, when Moscow tried to provoke Georgia’s involvement into the war; Russia could fulfill its plans successfully in August 2008, when it occupied., the Georgian territories and recognized Abkhazia and so called South Ossetia; de jure.
The existing political situation was reflected in South Caucasus region. The most important is the concession in the relationship between Armenia and Turkey; Armenian politicians note: “After the Georgian Russian war geopolitical; part of Armenia grew in the South Caucasus.” Russia showed to the west, that it could block the “power corridor”, from where the Europe is provided with gas and oil any time.
Moscow performed well planned future political plans. It did not united Abkhazia and South Ossetia to its territories, but announced them de-jure; Europe; cannot blame him for the expansion; of the territories. Russia signed the treaty with them on building military bases and deploying the army.
Turkey activated its political position in the region. New politics; began between Moscow; and Ankara; Russia was obviously satisfied with the position taken by Turkey.
Azerbaijan is in a more difficult situation. It preferred to wait during the August events. After the war Baku., became more close to Moscow.
It is well seen from above, that after August 2008, Georgia is “outsider” in the South Caucasus.
Thus Georgia has great political and diplomatic; tasks to solve to manage the existing difficult situation and return the political “weight” that it had before the war;
