: Oedipus
Prologue
What the character does:

Oedipus tells the people of Thebes that he’s doing all he
can to conquer the plague.
Oedipus gets information from Creon on what the oracle
said to do.
Oedipus says he’ll do all he can.
Analysis:
1. Oedipus is doing everything he can think of to deal with the
plague.
2.  Reassuring  people  in  my  care  that  I’m  capable  of  getting
the job done.
Tools:
To pacify, explain, take charge, promise, appease.
Scene 1
What the character does:
Oedipus curses the murderer and all who help him.
Oedipus makes Teiresias tell him what he knows.
Oedipus accuses Teiresias of conspiring with Creon.
Oedipus tries to get information.
Oedipus tells Teiresias to leave.
Analysis:
1. Oedipus is trying to  nd out who the murderer is.
2. Extracting an answer to a crucial question.
Tools:
To  interrogate,  plead,  reason,  level,  demand,  threaten,
accuse.

Scene 2
What the character does:
Oedipus accuses Creon of plotting for the throne.
Oedipus yields to Jocaste to let Creon go.
* Beat Change *
Oedipus questions Jocaste about the murder.
Oedipus  tells  Jocaste  about  killing  the  man  at  the
crossroads.
Oedipus suggests that he himself killed Laios.
Oedipus gets Jocaste to send for the shepherd.
Analysis:
1. Oedipus is accusing Creon of wanting to usurp the throne.
2. Exposing a threat to friends.
Tools:
To accuse, warn, lay out the facts, challenge.
Second Beat
1. Oedipus is putting together all of Jocaste’s information.
2. Enlisting a loved one’s aid.
Tools:
To explain, confess, demand, plead, lay oneself bare.
Here  the  beat  change  occurs  because  Oedipus  received
new  information  about  Laios  that  forces  him  then  to
reconsider the possibility that he himself may have indeed
been Laios’ murderer.
Scene 3

What the character does:
Oedipus  nds out that Polybos is dead.
Oedipus says he still fears the oracle of his youth.
Oedipus  gets  information  about  his  past  from  the
messenger from Corinth.
Oedipus demands to talk to the other shepherd.
Oedipus vows to  nd out about his birth no matter what.
Analysis:
1. Oedipus is resolving the confusion about his past.
2. Looking for the crucial answer to a mystery.
Tools:
To  review  the  facts,  hear  out  a  source,  form  a  theory,
enlist aid, test someone’s credibility.
Scene 4
What the character does:
Oedipus questions the shepherd about his own identity.
Oedipus  gures out the truth.
Analysis:
1. Oedipus puts the story of his life together.
2. Making a subordinate con rm a terrible suspicion.
Tools:
To  threaten,  reason,  buck  up  someone’s  con dence,  put
someone at ease.
Exodus

What the character does:
Oedipus tells the chorus about his su ering.
Oedipus asks to be led out of Thebes.
Oedipus says he deserves what he’s done to himself.
Oedipus makes up with Creon.
Oedipus  asks  Creon  to  take  care  of  his  family
responsibilities.
Oedipus tells his daughters he is sorry for what they will
go through.
Oedipus asks to be sent out of Thebes.
Oedipus asks Creon not to take his daughters away.
Analysis:
1.  Oedipus  is  getting  people  to  help  him  ful ll  his  nal
responsibilities in Thebes.
2. Making sure loved ones will be taken care of.
Tools:
To  issue  orders,  beg,  apologize,  get  a  commitment,  let
friends down easy, teach a lesson.
