How many clauses may be linked in complex sentences?
A complex sentence is composed of an independent clause and one or more dependent or subordinate clauses, which may come before or after the independent clause.
When a dependent clause comes before the independent clause, a comma is placed after the dependent clause.
If we are not going to the restaurant, we need to cancel our reservation.
When the independent clause comes before the dependent clause, no punctuation is required to combine the clauses in the same sentence.
We were disappointed that we lost the competition.
What types of interrogative sentences are distinguished?
There are distinguished 5 types of questions:
General questions ( Yes\No questions)
Special questions (Wh questions)
Special subject questions (questions to the subject)
Alternative questions (… or …?)
Tag questions ( questions with ‘tail’)
What must we understand by the term “sentence”?
The sentence is generally defined as a word or a group of words that expresses a thorough idea by giving a statement\ order, or asking a question, or exclaiming.
A complete English sentence must have three characteristics:
First, in written form, a sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with a period (i.e., a full-stop), a note of interrogation (i.e., a question mark), or a note of exclamation ( i.e., exclamation mark).
Second, it must express a complete thought, not fragmented.
Third, it must contain at least one subject (hidden\ visible) and one verb comprising an independent clause.
What functions may verbs have in the sentence? Give examples
Verb is a word that shows an action, but also shows state\possession, presence or absence of a person or thing.
I teach English at this academy. ( Action)
They seem happy today. ( State)
The players are on the ground. ( Presence)
The students are not in the classroom. ( Absence)
Functions of verbs in a sentence:
Predicate
My puppy drinks milk.
We have eaten all the pie.
Noun phrase modifier
The woman reading the book just yelled at me.
The food to eat is on the table.
Adjective phrase complement
You should be excited to study grammar.
I am irrationally afraid to fly.
Subject
Swimming is a good exercise.
To never visit the library disappoints librarians.
Subject complement
My favorite pastime is reading.
My job is to repair damaged cars.
Verbs can also convey a sense of time.
