In a nutshell, most e-commerce sites are hurting for 
customers – loyal customers. By “loyal” customers 
I mean people who have a reason to buy from an
e-commerce site week after week and month after 
month, instead of once in a blue moon.

We hear a lot of talk about how many “hits” a 
website gets. But hits don’t bring in revenue. Hits 
are like the members of walking clubs who meet 
every morning at the local shopping mall. They use 
the mall to exercise, not to shop. They have no 
intention of shopping. Once their walk is over, they 
jump in their car and go shop somewhere else! 
Likewise, hits on a website are just people going out 
for a stroll on the Internet. Hits don’t bring in 
revenue. Sales bring in revenue! And the truth is, 
most e-commerce sites are hurting for sales. 
Why? Because at most sites, shoppers have no 
incentive to make weekly and monthly purchases.
Internet users have no loyalty because most e-
commerce sites are more concerned about offering 
the lowest price than they are about building long-
term relationships!

touch of person-to-person relationships. As John 
Naisbitt observed 20 years ago, “The more hi-tech 
we have, the more hi-touch we need.” That’s why 
today, more than ever, people seek out and need the 
warmth of the human touch to counterbalance the 
cold environment of dot-coms and digits. 
Think for a moment – did you choose the last movie 
you saw from a website’s banner ad? Doubtful.
Most likely a friend or co-worker recommended the 
movie. Same goes for your favorite websites – 
most likely they were recommended by someone 
you knew and trusted, as opposed to your falling for 
a slick TV commercial or clicking on a rotating 
banner ad. 
Truth is, word-of-mouth recommendations have 
always been the most effective form of advertising.
That’s especially true today. You see, people like 
dealing with people. People trust and value hi-
touch relationships. Don’t you? And relationships 
solve the Internet’s biggest problem – a lack of 
loyal customers.

You recommend products and services all day, 
every day, for free. And people shop and buy based 
on your recommendations. Wouldn’t it be great to
