Edward La Trobe Bateman’s design concept for the University of Melbourne System Garden appears to have been inspired by a 1499 Venetian architectural treatise – the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili - which describes and illustrates an enclosed circular garden located on the mythical Isle of Cythera. The garden was laid out radially and concentrically about a central island on which stood a glassy structure. This plan of Cythera, from the Bodleian Library's copy of the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, depicts hedge-enclosed circular gardens, radially and concentrically planned, and ordered according to plant type, with a circular moat about a central island, which houses a glittering structure. In the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili this structure was built of alabaster 'shining like glass'. Source: Illustrations, Australian Centre, p.191
c.1865, the earliest known photograph of the Garden, taken looking towards its centre from the north-west. The location of the standpipe(s) from the Yan Yean water supply branch within the Botanic Garden is unknown, but this photograph shows a vertical element, possibly a standpipe, in the Garden’s centre.
