FISH SPECIES OF THE FERGANA VALLEY NEEDING PROTECTION

In recent years, great attention has been paid worldwide to the protection of biological 
diversity. In particular, Uzbekistan is also doing a lot of work in this area. Fish are of great importance 
for providing the population with high-quality food products. It is necessary to take under protection a 
variety of fish fauna of Uzbekistan and among them to allocate those who need protection. In order to 
disclose in this article information about the species of fish that need protection, sources dedicated to 
the fish fauna of the Fergana Valley have been studied. 
Until now, the fish fauna of the reservoirs of the Fergana Valley has not been fully studied. The 
information on the fish fauna of the Fergana Valley is reflected in the works of L.S. Berg, F.A. 
Turdakov, V.A. Maksunov, G. Kamilov, A. Baltabaev, M. Mukhammadiev. These ichthyological 
studies were conducted in 1933-1972, but in the past half century the ichthyofauna of the reservoirs of 
the Fergana Valley has not been scientifically investigated.

The information of researchers about the species of fish found in the Fergana Valley is 
different. In particular, about the species of fish in Syr Darya River, L.S. Berg is noted - 39 species, 
V.G. Nikolsky - 41 species, F. Turdakov - 50 species, V. Maksunov - 35 species, G. Kamilov writes, 
that 54 species are found in the upper and lower reaches of the Syr Darya River, according to the data 
of A. Baltabaev in the Kara Darya River, there are 28 species of fish [4]. But Sheraliev shows that the 
fish fauna of the Fergana Valley now includes 48 taxa of the species rank belonging to 36 genera, 12 
families and 5 orders [3]. Of these, 14 species of fish need protection and their relative-systematic 
species composition is given below.
