Commodore’s Corner
I want to wish all of our members a New Year full of health and, of course, sailing. We are fortunate in SW Florida to have such excellent sailing opportunities and a strong, vital sailing club to sponsor a multitude of activities. This club only works because of the voluntary effort of so many people. There is no doubt that GCSC offers great value for the membership. Take a look at the many activities coming up in the near future:
January membership meeting (Jan 11) featuring a chili cook off contest
and Ken Bardon speaking about his sailing circumnavigation
The Gulf Coast Sailing Club New Year Regatta
A cruising event to Panther Key
Sugden Picnic and Sailing with Jim Doane instructing on racing start tactics
A cruising day sail with lunch raft up
An update on new racing rules with Carol Robinson at the Naples Sailing & Yacht Club
And that is just January!! See our website www.gulfcoastsailingclub.org for more information on each of these events.
See you on the
Water!!

Please think about how you can help as we need your help to be successful. We will be updating our volunteer list in the coming months and have committee sign up tables at our next Members Meeting. 2017 is shaping up to be an exciting and fun filled year and we need your input and help especially on the newsletter, PR efforts and web page administration. If meeting and greeting people and helping to bring new members into the club might be something you would like, we would love to have you join a Committee. Our current Committees and volunteers are:

2017 Charity Regatta Committee --- Craig Spicer

Fleet Captain – Racing---Frank Brown

As you know but might not appreciate fully, the Gulf Coast Sailing Club exists because of its wonderful volunteers. Each year we, the club members, select officers from the membership to guide our club forward but many more volunteers are needed for the club to survive and thrive. Our main source of income is from our dues so membership is very important to wellbeing of the club so if you have friends who might be interested in the club bring them to the next meeting to see what we are about. Volunteering for the Regatta Committee, our social committee for coordinating our land side events, our small boat sailing committee, our public relations committee or helping out with our monthly newsletter or web page are all important roles for club members. Please visit the Club’s web page at www.gulfcoastsailingclub.org to check out events coming up

CIRCUMNAVIGATION AROUND THE WORLD BY SAIL
CAPTAIN KEN BARDON
A life time dream of sailing around the world was finally realized after his retirement. After almost a full year of planning, Ken departed Long Island, New York in the Fall of 2012 for Marco Island, and then left Marco in January of 2013 to commence the journey, returning to Marco in December 2015.
Prior to retiring in 2011, Ken was president of a company involved in high frequency electronic components in New York. He grew up on Long Island, and was always involved in water activities and sailing.
Before commencing this three-year circumnavigation, Ken accumulated over 80,000 blue water miles. In addition to four Atlantic crossings by sail, multiple blue water races to Bermuda, Cuba and Isla Mujeres, he has chartered in many locations around the world. For over thirty years he has held a Coast Guard 100 Ton Captain’s license with a sail endorsement.
Some of the other activities he is involved in on Marco Island include being the current Commodore of the Sailing Association of Marco Island (SAMI) and holding the position of Command Mission Pilot with the Civil Air Patrol, at the rank of Major.

Updated Racing Rules Seminar w/ US Sailing Judge Carol Robinson
UNDERSTANDING THE RACING RULES OF SAILING SEMINAR
“The purpose of The Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) is to keep sailors and boats safe and to provide fair competition”-US Sailing. Every four years the rule book is updated and these new updated rules apply to all of us starting January1, 2017 through the end of 2020.
Knowing the rules that currently apply is part of the game. From which direction should you approach a mark? Where will the other boats be when you get there? How do you protect your starting position? Which rules apply as you go around the course?
Carol will quickly review Rules 1-15 and code flag U and will cover some of the definitions. The following rules will be covered in depth:
16 Changing Course
17 On the Same Course Proper Course
SECTION C AT MARKS AND OBSTRUCTIONS (Especially rule 18)
Some years there are few changes; other years there are many. Even though some of the rules have not changed for several iterations, they still can be difficult to really understand. Carol with her colored boats will help.
The seminar will conclude with Carol’s moving two boats around the course board, blatantly breaking rules and attendees protesting as she goes. Arguments on who’s right and who’s wrong among attendees will be welcomed!
Sponsored by the Naples Sailing & Yacht Club
– 896 River Point Drive, Naples, Florida
US SAILING Members - Please bring your new rules book with you! http://www.ussailing.org/race-officials/rules/rulebook/
