similar academic skills. But there are those who feel it is better
to
place children
in groups with mixed abilities. I agree with the second point
of
view.
Some people believe that children do best when they study with others
of
similar
abilities. They say that this allows children
to
learn at the right pace. By following
this method, faster children will not be held back by slower children, and slower
children will not be frustrated by trying
to
move ahead
too
fast.
Other people, however, think that children do better when they are in a mixed-level
class. For one thing, children who are working at a higher level can serve as models
for other children. They show the lower-level children what might be possible for
them. Also, higher-level children can help others with their work. This provides them
with challenges and reinforces their own learning.
I feel that the best method is
to
place children in mixed-level classes. A
classroom fllled with variety opens children's minds in many ways. In addition,
no
two
children are exactly alike. Therefore, it is impossible
to
have a completely
homogenous class, so why try
to
have one when you can have all the advantages
of
a mixed-level class?
There may be some advantages
to
having children study only with others
of
similar abilities, but I feel that there are many more advantages
to
studying in a
mixed-level group.

Some people believe that the government should provide complete flnancial
support to universities in order
to
make higher education available to all who
want it. I completely support this opinion. Everyone beneflts when more people are
educated, and many deserving people are denied a university education because
they cannot afford
to
pay for it.
Society as a whole beneflts when more people are educated. Some people may
complain about supporting others' education through the taxes they pay
to
the
government. "Why should I pay my hard-earned money for someone else
to
go to
school?" they may say. But the fact is that it is not only the individual who beneflts
from the education. A person who studies
to
become a doctor my save the life of
someone you love. A person who studies
to
become an engineer may design roads
and bridges that you use every day. There are endless examples. Educated people
contribute important things
to
society, and we all beneflt from it.
There are many smart and talented people who would beneflt from a university
education but cannot afford it. This is not fair. Higher education should not
be available only to those who have enough money to pay for it. Then only a
small, exclusive group would be able to become professionals while many other
people would waste their talents and dreams on jobs that didn't interest them.
Everybody who has the desire, skills, and talents to pursue a university education
should be allowed
to
do so.
