ACTIVE AND PASSIVE VOICE 
A sentence can be in either active or passive voice. Most sentences use active voice, but passive 
voice is used in certain situations. Passive voice is often used in describing process diagrams. 
(See Chapter I, page 4.) 
In an active voice sentence, the subject performs the action expressed by the main verb. 
Telecommuters work at home.

The sentence above is in active voice. The subject, 
telecommuters, 
performs the action, 
work. 
In a passive voice sentence, the subject receives the action. 
The apartment was painted by the tenant.

The sentence above is in passive voice. The subject, 
apartment, 
did not perform the action, 
paint. 
The apartment didn't paint. The tenant painted the apartment. 
Use passive voice when the agent (the one that performs the action) is unknown or unim­
portant. You don't have to mention the agent in a passive voice sentence, but you can. If you 
mention the agent, use the preposition
