Grappling with roots of “honour”-based-violence against women
In Pakistan, more than 1,000 women are killed each year by their families. These murders are perpetrated in the name of honour. Only few victims survive the attacks, but those that do are often pressured to forgive their aggressors. As a result, the guilty go free.
Pakistani filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s documentary ‘A Girl in the River: the Price of Forgiveness’ was shown to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women 25 November.
Told through the lens of a love story, the film examines the tensions between modernism and tradition in Pakistan and follows Saba, a young Pakistani woman, who has survived her attempted “honour” killing by her own family. The film received the prize for Best Documentary Short Subject at the 2016 Academy Awards.
Fighting “honour”-based violence and killings is exceedingly complex, as was highlighted by the panel discussion which followed the screening. Under the moderation of UNIS Director Martin Nesirky, three experts - Martina Gredler, Chairperson of Vienna NGO Committee on Status of Women, Ali Ahmad, Researcher and Director of the Peace Museum Vienna, and Andrada Filip, Project Coordinator of Women Against Violence Europe (WAVE) - shared their knowledge with the audience.
All speakers emphasized the importance of understanding how deeply ingrained the concept of honour is in these patriarchal communities. It is a core value of society and intrinsically defines the worth of a person. Thus, even other women frequently lack sympathy for the victims.
The experts concluded that a redefinition of the meaning of honour could be introduced through the education and empowerment of women as well as through the inclusion of village elders, religious authorities and male community members in a constructive conversation.
Two UN campaigns adopt this strategy: ‘He for She’ encourages men and boys to become agents of change and take action against gender-based injustice. In addition, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon proclaimed the 25th of every month as “Orange Day”. Under the banner of this bright and optimistic colour, awareness of gender-based violence should be raised and people mobilized.
“Nomus” uchun ayollarga nisbatan qilingan zo’ravonlik ildizlariga qarshi kurash
Pokistonda har yili 1000 dan ortiq ayollar o’z oila a’zolari tomonidan o'ldiriladi. Ushbu qotilliklarni sodir etishda nomus vaj sifatida keltiriladi. Bunday zo’ravonliklardan faqat ozgina qurbonlar omon qolishadi, biroq ular tajovuzkorlarni kechirishga majbur qilinadi. Natijada, aybdorlar jazodan qutulib qoladi.
Pokistonlik kinorejissyor Sharmin Obaid-Chinoyning "Daryodagi qiz: kechirim bahosi" hujjatli filmi 25-noyabr Xalqaro ayollarga nisbatan zo'ravonliklarga qarshi kurash kuni munosabati bilan namoyish etildi.
Sevgi hikoyasiga asoslanib tasvirlangan ushbu film Pokistondagi modernizm va urf-odat o'rtasidagi ziddiyatlarni ko'rib chiqadi va o'z oilasi tomonidan or-nomus uchun o'ldirilishga harakat qilingan biroq omon qolgan Pokistonlik yosh ayol Saba taqdiri haqida hikoya qiladi. Film 2016-yilgi Oskar mukofotida eng yaxshi qisqa metrajli hujjatli film mukofotiga sazovor bo'ldi.
"Or-nomus"ga asoslangan zo'ravonlik va qotilliklarga qarshi kurash juda murakkab bo’lib, bu film namoyishidan keyin bo'lib o'tgan umumiy muhokamada ta'kidlandi. UNIS direktori Martin Nesirkining moderatorligi ostida uchta mutaxassis ya’ni - Venadagi ayollarning maqomi bo'yicha nodavlat qo'mitasi raisi Martina Gredler, tadqiqotchi va tinchlik muzeyi direktori Ali Ahmad va Yevropada ayollarga nisbatan zo'ravonlikka qarshi kurash loyihasi koordinatori Andrada Filip – tinglovchilar bilan o'z bilimlarini o'rtoqlashdi.
Barcha ma'ruzachilar ushbu patriarxal jamoalarda nomus tushunchasi naqadar chuqur singib ketganligini anglash muhimligini ta'kidladilar. Bu jamiyatning asosiy qadriyatidir va insonning qadr-qimmatini o'ziga xos ravishda belgilaydi. Shu sababli hatto ba’zi boshqa ayollar ham qurbonlarga hamdardlik bildirishmaydi.
Or-nomus ma'nosini jamiyatga qaytadan tadbiq qilish mumkin ya’ni ayollarni o'qitish va ularning imkoniyatlarini kengaytirish, shuningdek qishloq oqsoqollari, diniy idoralar va erkaklar jamoat a'zolarini konstruktiv suhbatga jalb qilish orqali deb ta’kidlamoqda mutaxasislar jamoasi.
BMTning ikki kampaniyasi “Erkak ayol uchun” deb nomlangan strategiyani qabul qildi. Unga ko’ra, ushbu strategiya erkaklar va o'g'il bolalarni o'zgarish vakillari bo'lishga va gender tengsizlikka yoki adolatsizlikka qarshi choralar ko'rishga undaydi. Bundan tashqari, Bosh kotib Pan Gi Mun har oyning 25-kunini "to'q sariq kun" deb e'lon qildi. Ushbu yorqin va optimistik rang bayrog'i ostida jinsiy zo'ravonlik to'g'risida xabardorlikni oshirish va odamlarni safarbar qilish ko’zda tutilgan.
