Some Good Rules
1. Every man is the architect of his own fortune.
2. A man is known by the company he keeps.
3. Handsome is as handsome does.
4. A bird may be known by its song.
5. The devil is not so black as he is painted.
A Good Beginning
Ann: Hi, Bob. How are you?
Bob: Hello, Ann. I'm fine, thanks. And you?
Ann: Great. Look here, Bob, can you imagine yourself as a newspaper correspondent?
Bob: Why, of course. I like writing articles for the university newspaper. It's my hobby. I'm editor of the university newspaper, you know.
Ann: So you are an experienced journalist already. I'd like to be a journalist too, but I'm afraid I've no talent.
Bob: It's really a hard job. But when you see the article in the newspaper, you feel satisfied.
Ann: I'd like to know how it's done.
Bob: It takes a lot of time and effort indeed.
Ann: That's why you took so tired after each issue comes out.
Bob: Care killed the cat, they say. But I am joking, of course. It's not so difficult as it seems to be. The more experience you have the easier it gets. The devil is not so black as he is painted, you know.
Ann: Well, I'd better go now. I'm afraid to be late for my classes. Give my regards to Helen and Pete. See you.
Bob: Bye.

High Hopes
One day a young country girl was going to town with a bucket of milk on her head. She said to herself, "When I come to the market, I will sell the milk at a high price and buy twenty eggs with the money. Out of these eggs I'll get twenty chickens. As soon as the chickens are large enough, I'll sell them and buy a new
dress for myself. It'll be a yellow dress to match my hair. On May Day, if the weather is fine, if it doesn't rain, I'll put on the yellow dress and go to town. Everybody will look at me and say: 'What a beautiful girl!' But I'll pass by without looking at them. I'll only shake (трясти, встряхивать) my head like that." And she shook her head and down came the milk, the eggs, the chickens and the yellow dress.
A Parrot
A man had a speaking parrot. But the parrot could only say one phrase. The phrase was, "There is no doubt about it (Несомненно. Можете не сомневаться в этом)." The man got tired of the parrot and decided to sell it. He took the parrot to the market in the cage and shouted, "Who wants my speaking parrot, twenty pounds for my parrot!"
man who was walking by and heard these words came up to the cage and asked, "Parrot, are you really so clever that you cost twenty pounds?'' ``There is no doubt about it!" said the parrot.
The man liked the answer so much that he paid for the parrot and brought him home. But time passed and the parrot never said anything else. The man came up to the cage one day and said, "What a fool I was when I bought you once at twenty pounds!" "There is no doubt about it," said the parrot.

Exercise 2 Check your knowledge of the words by the following statements:
He was a man of 35, rather tall, dark-eyed and dark-skinned, with long brown hair, well combed. My father was of a dark-complexion, with a great forehead and dark hazel eyes. John looks older than he is. But his brother looks just his age. They say it’s very easy for the long legged to run fast. The girl was pretty; she had an oval face, blue eyes and a straight nose. She was well-shaped and had a pleasant smile. The boy was cross-eyed with hundreds of freckles on his cheeks and nose, his hair was red and wavy.
Exercise 3 Give short answers:
Is that girl with fair hair your sister? Your brother must be a tall handsome boy, mustn’t he? Helen is going to be a beautiful girl, isn’t she? Don’t you remember that little boy with big brown eyes and an up-turned nose? That bald-headed stout man is your chief, isn’t he? Do you know that short man with thick black hair? Do you think I must lose weight? Schoolgirls usually wear pigtails, don’t they? I hear your brother is going to grow beard, isn’t he?
Exercise 4 Memorize:
-Do you know my elder brother John?
-I’m not really sure I do. What does he look like?
-He is rather tall, dark-eyed with an up-turned nose.
-Oh, yes, certainly I know him.
-Will you meet my sister at the station? I’m afraid I shan’t (won’t be) be able to get there in time after work.
-With pleasure, but I have never seen her… How can I recognize her among so many people?
-Well, try to imagine her appearance (what she looks like). She is middle sized, round-faced, blue-eyed with long yellow hair.
-That’s clear. So long. But, John, what’s her name?
-How old is your friend Nora Jackson?
-Why do you ask me about her?
-I must make a list of those who go in for sport in your class.
-She is about 15, but I’m not sure I know her age exactly.
Exercise 5. Change the following sentences as in the model.
M: she has dark hair. She is a dark-haired girl.
The old man had a long beard. Jack had around face, though he was rather slim. John was never tall, he was of medium size. There were thousands of freckles on his face. Her eyes were hazel (brown, blue). His eyes were poor: he couldn’t see anything near him. I’ll never forget that man; he had such a strange square head. There were a lot of wrinkles on his face. That man had only one eye.
Exercise 6. Answer questions:
How does your brother look after his illness? What does your new boy-friend (girl-friend) look like? Does he look like his father or mother? What can you say of your friend’s (neighbour’s) complexion? What kind of eyesight have you? How often do you have you hair cut? What do you use to brush your hair? Who is that pretty girl standing over there? What’s the name of that man with long grey hair? Why do you want to lose (to gain) weight? What do people usually do to lose (gain) weight? How old is your brother (father, son)?
