Suicide in Georgian Army
Summary
Suicide phenomenon is the subject of our study. Urgency of the selected problem in the whole world creates a necessity of carrying out of deep investigation in this regard. As is known suicide ranks third after cancer and cardiovascular diseases among the causes of death. In 2005 there were half a million of suicide cases and 5 million parasuicide cases worldwide. In 2008 this number reached 814.000 per year. It means that every day 2200 humans fall victim to suicide. Without doubt, these data cause concern and not only give us a reason to study this phenomenon, but also make world society to think seriously about this problem. This fact is not less anxious for Georgia, because in many cases suicide takes place in sheltered organization, such the army is.
Army is an institution, which is mainly managed by ideology and idea of sacrifice for homeland, along with military order and strong discipline. Hierarchy principle, which is created by complicated system of military ranks and assignments, forms complicated mechanism of both vertical and horizontal responsibility.
Georgian Army is dishonored in public view in the XXI century, because no social-cultural norms are functioned and only total lawlessness and permissiveness dominates under cover of hierarchy and discipline.
Main reasons of suicide facts in the Army are:

  system of military education, which is directed to fearlessness and easy sacrifice of life by various reasons;
  
• 
  heavy conditions in the Army; and here factor of disadaptaion shows itself (number of suicides is a lot more in recruits);
  
• 
  it is also possible to name destruction of all kinds of indivuality in the militaries the main reason of suicide.
  

There is average number of about 15 cases of suicide per year in the Georgian Army, and criminal cases are initiated almost in every single fact under article of incitement to suicide, but no one from them is investigated objectively. Firearm, hanging, cold arm and others are named among the main weapons of suicide.
In Georgian conditions probably suicide should be explained by unbearable conditions of life (material, social norms and others), exhaustion of individual, and doesn’t matter is it physiological depletion (the question is nervous system disorder because of insufficient nutrition or over fatigue) or else complicated interrelations, including depression and permanent humiliation on the part of people around us. Also it should be noted oppression and, probably, humiliation of various individuals on the part of community, which finally annihilates the sense of self-identification with the group, formed during long period of time and creates the feeling of meaningless of life, and as result soldier decides to kill himself.
Mainly the attitude of society to this vital formation should be changed. Besides, authorities must objectively investigate every single case of suicide; all facts of abuse, humiliation and oppression should be revealed and liquidated in order to completely eliminate the facts of suicide in the Georgian Army.
