5.THE PREPOSITION AS THE MAIN COMPONENT OF PHRASAL VERBS

As noted above, phrasal verbs include a verb of high frequency of use (to be, to do, to bring, to carry, to give, to make, to get, to take, to put, to set, to keep, to hold, to throw, to come, to go, to fall, to turn, to see, to look and etc.). Phrasal verbs can also have a preposition with them. It should also be mentioned that a good knowledge of the prepositions of the English language allows speaker not only to express a large number of concepts, but also use a minimum number of initial elements.

Thus, the use of phrasal verbs will always be focused on speaking speech of everyday English, on the language that the vast majority of its native speakers use.

In addition, the use of phrasal verbs will avoid "clumsy" expressions and will significantly enrich speech with words and synonyms of colloquial style. But this does not limit the meaning of the above-mentioned language units for learning English. Speaking about the meaning and high frequency of using phrasal verbs, Bolinger wonders "Why the success? [Why are they (phrasal verbs) so successful?] "and immediately answers it:" It must lie in the family and manageability of the elements. [In all likelihood, it (success) lies in the recognition and ease of use of elements (phrasal verbs).] " In other words, by studying such common and ambiguous phrasal verbs as, for example, "to put up," "to put down," "to turn in" and many others, the speaker will be able to express many concepts. 16 For example, the meaning of such a phrasal verb as "to take" changes by using with prepositions

  • Take off - Could you take your coat off?

  • Take off - The plane is taking off right now.

  • Take up - She decided to take up extreme kinds of sport.

  • Take after - Alice takes after her grandmother.

  • Take out - Can I take you out some time?

  • Take in - When she heard the details, she began to take in the information.

  • Take back - Can I take my keys back?

  • Take down - The old garage was taken down.

  • Take on - Congratulations! You are taken on!

  • Take over - Charles took over his responsibilities for the department.
