From Ghostbusters to libraries: the Power of XUL

ABSTRACT

XML User-interface Language (XUL) could have a major impact on the functionality, ease of development and interoperability of user interfaces for a range of library systems. This article introduces XUL and its use in Mozilla / Firefox extensions. It also describes OPAX, a prototype XUL OPAC user interface based on the Mozilla Amazon Browser.


Browser wars restarted

Firefox 1.0 [1], a lightweight version of the Mozilla 1.7 browser, was launched in November 2004. It represents one more excellent reason for avoiding Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE). The latter’s security problems (Acohido, 2004) have been a sufficient incentive for many users to migrate to Mozilla-based browsers. And Microsoft’s belated and limited response to the problem of pop-up advertisements only adds to the impetus. Users of IE for Windows XP SP2 can avail of a mediocre pop-up blocker but half of Windows users aren’t using XP. To all of this can be added the lack of tabbed browsing, an essential feature and long available in Mozilla.


But, for anyone not yet convinced that the move from IE to a Mozilla browser can only improve their productivity, extensions should decide the issue.

Extensions


The Mozilla open-source software project has produced several outstanding Web and email applications. These include the Mozilla suite [2], incorporating browser, email client, calendar and Web authoring system. As shorthand, I will refer to the browser component of this suite as the Mozilla browser. Also from the Mozilla stable are the standalone browser and email client, Firefox and Thunderbird [3] respectively. Furthermore, Firefox is the basis for the latest Netscape browser, currently available as a preview (Bishop, 2004).
All of these browsers and Thunderbird can take advantage of small add-ons called extensions [4]. The latter provide functions of specific interest to particular users, for example, specialised search or navigation features, blogging aids and security enhancements. The use of extensions allows the size of the basic Firefox and Thunderbird downloads to remain relatively small. To put this in perspective, Firefox for Windows is 4.7MB on download. Service Pack 1, that is the bug fixes, for IE 6.0 is up to 75 MB.
An extension can be installed with a couple of mouse clicks and the downloads are generally just a few kilobytes in size. Users are kept informed of extension updates and their installation is equally simple. Most are available for a range of operating systems including Windows, Linux and MacOS.


    Not surprisingly, one of the most popular extensions is Adblock [5], which filters out banner ads. Another consistently popular extension is Tabbrowser Preferences [6]; this enhances controls for tabbed browsing. For example, it allows tabs to be selected simply by moving the mouse onto them, rather than having to click on them.

    Extensions are a clear illustration of the strength of open-source software: a user notices a need, creates an extension and uploads it to the relevant extensions site. The process doesn’t require hard-core programming; familiarity with XML and JavaScript is all that’s needed. And there’s a vibrant community, mozdev.org [7], ready to support developers and host their projects.



    On the Mozilla update site alone, as of December 1st 2004, there are twenty extensions available for Thunderbird 0.9 [8], seventy-four for the Mozilla 1.7.x browser [9] and 159 for Firefox 1.0 [10]. More are available elsewhere, for example, from mozdev.org. If you have ever thought of a clever feature that would aid your browser use, chances are someone else has had the same thought and has created an extension to make it possible. I have often wished that I could save Web form entries as files without having to cut and paste; the Scribe extension [11] does this. And I’m regularly frustrated when copying text from a Web page to find that the formatting is copied too; the Copy Plain Text extension [12] solves this problem.

Search extensions


There are a whole range of extensions that facilitate searching and browsing; many are of particular relevance to libraries. The following are just a few examples.


  • The Athens Toolbar [13] assists existing Athens users in managing their accounts and navigating between resources.



  • The PubMed toolbar [14] provides additional functionality to the PubMed interface.



  • The Biobar toolbar [15] allows power-browsing of biological data and databases.



  • The bioFOX project [16] aims to implement various bioinformatics extensions to enable tasks such as analysis of genes.



  • The HONcode (Health On the Net Foundation) extension [17] allows users to identify HON-accredited Web sites.



  • The Context Search extension [18] changes the Web Search for context item into a menu containing the user’s search term, as illustrated in Figure 1. Users can then access a search engine directly without first having to access the engine's Web page. They can choose which search engines to make available via the MyCroft search plug-ins project described below. In Figure 1, the Tübingen University Library OPAC is about to be searched for the term open source.



  • The MyCroft project [19] provides over 1,200 search plug-ins. The latter are based on a concept similar to extensions. The chosen search engines are made available via the search box in the top right-hand corner of Firefox, as can be seen in Figure 1. In this illustration, the search term and search engine are the same as those chosen via the Context Search extension. A simple configuration file is all that is required to add a library catalogue search engine to the Firefox search bar and, thus, to the Web Search for context item.



  • The Mozilla Amazon Browser (MAB) [20], written by Fabio Serra, provides a richer interface to the Amazon.com online bookshop. Key features include the ability to search several of Amazon’s country-specific sites within one window and to compare the price of the same product between these sites. Results can be sorted by a range of fields such as used price, new price, customer rating and date of publication. MAB can be installed as an extension or simply run as a Web application on the Mozilla or Firefox browsers. It is one of several Amazon-related extensions.

Breaking the IE habit

There is now very little reason for anyone to use IE. If there’s an IE feature you particularly like, chances are there’s an extension that provides the same functionality in Mozilla or Firefox. For example, many appreciate the ability to select a paragraph by triple clicking on the text. This is now available for Firefox and Thunderbird via the TripleSelect extension [21]. Again, the IE facility to handle multiple simultaneous file downloads, using one of several external download managers, is now available via the FlashGot [22] extension.



    Early in 2004, Amazon.com launched a search engine called A9.com. Initially, the specialised A9 toolbar for use with this engine was only available for IE. But, within a month of the launch, A9 had bowed to popular demand and a Firefox extension toolbar appeared (Search Engine Journal, 2004). In a similar vein, the Googlebar [23] is now available as a Firefox extension, as is the Yahoo toolbar [24], albeit with some reduced functionality as yet.


One of the only functions for which Windows users still need IE is to access Windows Update; Microsoft have been careful to ensure that this is impossible without one of their browsers. For these occasions, and for accessing sites that use proprietary Microsoft features such as ActiveX, there is an extension [25] that allows the current page, or a selected link, to be opened in IE simply by choosing a menu option.


The Netscape Firefox Preview goes one step further and allows pages to be reloaded in the same browser window but with the IE rendering engine (Evers, 2004). For Opera and Mozilla-based browsers, there has long been a Netscape plug-in available that displays ActiveX controls. However, because of the fundamental security problems with ActiveX, such a plug-in wouldn’t be shipped in Opera or Mozilla by default. The Netscape Firefox Preview approach is to allow users to determine, for each Web site they visit, whether to use the less secure IE mode and thus enable ActiveX controls.

What all extensions have in common is that they are written using an open source XML language called XUL (XML User-interface Language) [26]. Pronounced to rhyme with cool, the name is a reference to Zuul, a character in the film Ghostbusters [27].


XUL is a language for describing the user interfaces of applications. It was created to facilitate the fast and simple development of the Mozilla browser [28]. But it was the launch of Firefox that really brought XUL into the public gaze. The Thunderbird e-mail reader, the NVu HTML editor [29] and the Sunbird calendar [30] are also written in XUL.
Themes, also referred to as skins, define the look and feel of Mozilla products. Just as third parties can use XUL to create extensions, so they can use it to create new themes. As of early December 2004, there are fifty-eight Firefox 1.0 themes available for download [31]. The use of a different theme might just change the colour scheme of Firefox. But it could change the browser’s entire appearance, or even its behaviour. Using themes, a library could easily provide a browser that was customised for local user requirements. The institution’s visual identity could be incorporated and the browser could be preloaded with bookmarks for locally useful information sources. In addition, icons could be added to provide access to functions for users with special accessibility requirements.

One of the strengths of XUL development is that it builds on skills that Web authors already possess, namely, XML, JavaScript, RDF and CSS. In addition, the XUL language itself is much simpler than, for example, Java and Visual C++, and much more powerful than DHTML (Dynamic HTML). The sophistication of XUL is illustrated by it use in the creation of the Firefox dialog boxes in Figure 2.

Opax


XUL has the power, simplicity and functionality to become the standard for the entire range of library-related user interfaces. To illustrate this, a prototype XUL-based OPAC user interface, OPAX, has been developed [32]. The OPAX interface is built on the functionality and appearance of the Mozilla Amazon Browser (MAB) described earlier. All files were originally developed for MAB but many have been modified for this application. Figure 3 illustrates the results of a search in OPAX on the keyword XSL.
As with MAB, OPAX can be installed as an extension or run as a Web application in Firefox. Because the system is only a mock-up, it doesn’t yet connect to a real library catalogue; the example data is hard-coded. However, it does connect to the Amazon site via the Amazon E-Commerce Service (ECS) [33]. The latter provides developers with access to Amazon product data and e-commerce functionality.
The user interface features that XUL enable are far more sophisticated than those available solely via HTML. Just as MAB takes advantage of this to add functionality to the Amazon bookshop user interface, so OPAX adds functionality to a standard OPAC user interface. As well as providing a more flexible and customisable user interface, XUL enables the aggregation of content from a library catalogue and the Amazon site, as illustrated in Figure 4. The user submits a search request to OPAX and a JavaScript submits a URL encoding this request to Amazon ECS. The latter returns an XML-encoded response. In the completed application, a JavaScript will then make a similar request to the library catalogue; in this prototype, the system always returns the same hard-coded response. The results from the two sources are then merged and presented via the OPAX user interface.
This aggregation of data enables a richer search result; book cover images, user reviews and other Amazon features are now available to the OPAC user. The interface is also richer; whereas a typical university OPAC might sort results by title, author or date, the OPAX interface allows results to be sorted by any data field from either the library catalogue or the Amazon site. And the display order of these data fields can be easily changed by dragging and dropping the columns. This is illustrated in Figure 5, which shows the same search as in Figure 3 but with results sorted by title rather than author, and with different data fields displayed.

As well as the use of standards such as Z39.50, there are various proprietary methods available for connecting OPACs to catalogue systems. In addition, many of the large library suppliers have signed up to implement a NISO standard set of Web service interfaces called VIEWS [34].


The term Web service refers to the use of standards such as XML, SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) [35], REST (REpresentational State Transfer) (He, 2004), HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol) and related technologies to enable the seamless interoperability of Web-based applications. Web services go beyond the functionality of simple Web pages; they provide dynamic machine-to-machine functionality that can be remotely invoked. Companies such as Amazon have implemented Web services that enable software developers to interact with the Amazon Web site through standard protocols. The Amazon ECS is an example of such a Web Service. It uses both SOAP and REST. MAB and OPAX use the REST interface.
The VIEWS initiative was launched in June 2004 and so is still at an early stage. It offers the exiting prospect of standard connectivity within and between library systems. It’s not the only development in this area; SRW/U (Search and Retrieval Web/URL Service) [36] is another collection of Web service-based protocols, in this case, combining HTTP and an XML version of Z39.50.
The combination of standard connectivity, for example via VIEWS or SRW/U, and a standard XUL-based user interface means that the prototype described in this article could become available across a wide range of vendor catalogue products.

The structure of a xul application


A typical XUL user interface comprises three sets of components:


  • The XUL content declares windows and the associated user interface elements. This component is largely provided by XUL and JavaScript files.

  • The XUL skin, or theme, defines the appearance of an application via CSS style sheets and images.

  • The XUL locale declares any displayable text, thus facilitating internationalisation.

This separation of functions results in applications in which layout, appearance and localisation for different languages can be altered independently of one another and of the application logic.

XUL code

To illustrate the simplicity of the XUL language itself, Figure 7 lists part of the MAB file settings.xul used in MAB and OPAX to describe the dialog box in Figure 6.


The XUL root element is window. Among the dialog box features defined by window’s attributes are a unique identifier and the box’s dimensions. The XUL Namespace URI (Uniform Resource Identifier) is also declared:

Fans of the Ghostbusters film will recognise the characters referred to by keymaster and gatekeeper. In the same film, the ghost Zuul possesses a character called Dana and announces that There is no Dana, only Zuul. The developers of XUL have adopted the slogan There is no data, only XUL to reflect the fact that, unusually for an XML application, XUL defines a user interface rather than a document [27].
The sub-elements of groupbox are mainly self-explanatory. Layout in XUL is largely based on the Box Model [37]. This divides a window into a series of boxes. A vertical box, or vbox, aligns its child elements vertically, as in a table column. A horizontal box, or hbox, aligns them horizontally, as in a table row. Thus, the Ok and Cancel buttons are displayed side by side. The one-line button definition can be favourably compared to the lengthy code required to create a button in C++.
The flex attribute is a very useful innovation. It specifies to what degree an element will change size to fill available space. If flex is assigned the value 1, the element will expand until it’s pushed back by other elements. In this example, the box containing the two buttons will fill all the window space not contained by the group-box. If flex had been assigned the value 0, the box would have been assigned a default minimum space. Code defining resize requirements in other languages is generally verbose and complicated.
There's something strange…and it don't look good [38]

XAML, pronounced Zammel, stands for eXtensible Application Markup Language. This is Microsoft's rival to XUL and was designed as the primary way to create a UI in the "Longhorn" programming model [39]. Longhorn is Microsoft’s long-delayed next generation operating system. Thus, XAML is part of the Microsoft .NET Framework, one of the three pillars of Longhorn [40]. XAML is certainly a powerful system but it may be overkill for the average application.


Although it is not a public standard itself, XUL makes extensive use of existing standards, defining new ones only where strictly necessary. The developers of XAML, on the other hand, have chosen not to use common standards such as SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics), HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Instead, they have found it necessary to develop their own proprietary versions (Moise, 2003). Thus, users are further tied to Microsoft products. As Miguel de Icaza, co-founder of the Gnome Linux desktop, comments (Netcraft, 2004),
A lot of people today cannot migrate to Linux or cannot migrate to Mozilla because a lot of their internal Web sites happen to use IE extensions. Now imagine a world where you can only use XAML.
When Longhorn eventually sees the light of day at the end of 2006, this scenario is a distinct possibility.
XUL and XAML are just two examples of a new breed of XML user interface language formats. Another influential example is Macromedia's Flex [41]. The latter is similar to XUL in some ways but requires a server; solely client-based Flex tools are not possible. This is likely to prevent Flex becoming the front-runner in the user interface stakes.
Whither XUL?

XUL’s role goes beyond the development of advanced user interfaces for Mozilla products. XUL’s developers visualise it as a central component in the building of cross-platform applications. As a first step in this process, Mozilla developers are taking a conceptual leap to think beyond the Web browser as simply being a tool for viewing Web pages, and instead, to look at it as a framework -- a runtime environment for executing applications (Fuecks, 2003) in the same way that Java and .NET are runtime environments.
The second step is to enable standalone XUL applications that don’t require Mozilla to be installed. The goal of XULRunner [42] is to provide a lightweight container application to replace Mozilla as a runtime environment. Alternatively, the Zulu layout engine [43] implements XUL in Flash, thus enabling XUL applications to work in any Flash-enabled browser.
With the introduction of Jazilla [44], a cross-browser solution particularly suited to XUL Web pages may now be possible. Jazilla is a Mozilla-like browser, written in Java, which uses a XUL engine to render the user interface. An Applet is a small Java program that can be embedded in the HTML of a Web page and executed inside a Java-enabled browser. Jazilla could, in theory, be implemented as an Applet, in which case, any Java-enabled browser could support XUL. This would facilitate XUL support in Opera and IE as well as in Mozilla products.
There is a distinct move towards declarative, markup-driven user interfaces. It’s not yet clear whether XUL will emerge as the leader in this field, although its leverage of common standards and its long and excellent track record make this the ideal scenario. XUL is already available; XAML won’t be shipped in a Microsoft product until Longhorn is released. But, whichever syntax gains the upper hand, library software will never be the same again.
