Lesson aim: to introduce some techniques for teaching reading

Objectives:

Learning Outcomes:




  • to introduce some techniques for teaching reading

  • to help participants explore some characteristics of reading activity

  • to use small groups or pairs during reading activities so that all students can practise reading simultaneously

By the end of the lesson the students will

have been able
➡ to adapt reading activities to different levels

➡ to expose participants to ways of teaching reading to elementary learners

Teacher asks several questions on the previous theme



Warm up activity: Listening to the song.

  1. Teacher asks some warm up questions concerning recorded video clip:

1. What do you understand from this song?

2. What do people do?

3. What do you like and dislike about each way of staying alive?




Students answer the questions in groups

Students answer the questions based on their background knowledge



Main part

(65 min)


Teacher summarizes the activity and divides the class into 3 groups.

Activity1. Staying alive. Describing.
Then the teacher distributes cards to each group and asks to volunteer a representative to describe the word written on card. The 3 groups should guess the word.

Teacher summarizes the activity by clearly stating the stages of the introduction section


Activity 2. Matching new words and definition. The teacher says that they are going to work with words and their definition and distributes cards in jumbled order, tell the students to put them in order according to the stages.

Teacher checks the task and comments on the parts of the text by this summarizing the activity



Activity 3. Listen and check. Working with text.

Teacher distributes a text of song and asks to fill the gaps in the text with appropriate words from the box.


Activity 4. Chain story. Teacher tells participants that this time they are going to read the text in pairs. Teacher tells them that one person in each pair should find the advantages of medicine in staying alive. The second person should find disadvantages of medicine in staying alive and so on.

After the task is done the teacher summarizes the activity.



Activity 5. Jigsaw reading

Teacher distributes the cards A and B to group. Asks to work in pairs.

Teacher asks the students to match the text in order.

After the task is done the teacher summarizes the activity.



Activity 6. Brainstorming

The teacher summarizes the lesson with the help of students and draws the scheme on the blackboard..




Representative will describe the word. Three groups will guess the word.

Students will answer to the question by giving the own opinion

Students will put the words in order

Students read the text and and fill in the gaps in.

Students create their own stories and share with groupmates.

Students tell the story of their partner.

The students will present their role-play using the vocabulary.

Students will brainstorm the lesson.



Closure

(5 min)

Teacher asks Students to give a summary of the lesson.

Teacher assesses the groups and gives home-task to find additional information about staying alive.



Students summarize the lesson and write down their homework
