Section 1
Questions 1–10
You will hear a number of different recordings and you will have
to answer questions on what you hear. There will be time for you
to read the instructions and questions and you will have a chance
to check your work. All the recordings will be played once only.
The test is in four sections. At the end of the test you will be given
ten minutes to transfer your answers to the answer sheet. Now
turn to Section 1.
Section 1. You will hear a telephone conversation between a customer
and a sales representative who are discussing hiring a moving truck.
First you have some time to look at questions 1 to 10.
You will see that an example has been done for you. On this
occasion only, the conversation relating to this will be played first.
Gary:
Hello, A1
Moving Truck Hire, Gary here.
Meg:
Oh hello, I’m moving house and I need to hire a truck
and I just wanted to get some advice from you, because
I really don’t know much about them.
Gary:
OK, well if you tell me what your needs are, I can
prepare a quote for you and send it to you.
Meg:
OK, great.
Gary:
Now, can I just get some contact
details from you for
the form. Your name is …?
Meg:
Meg, Meg Smith.
The answer is Smith, so ‘Smith’ has been written in the space.
Now we shall begin. You should answer the questions as you listen
because you will not hear the recording a second time. Listen
carefully and answer questions 1 to 10.
Gary:

Meg:
Meg, Meg Smith.
Gary:
Thank you. Now, what’s your address?
Meg:
15 Neal Street
Gary:
Is that N-E-I-L or N-E-A-L?
Meg:
A-L.
Gary:
Right. And what’s the suburb?
Meg:
Springfield.
Gary:
Got it. And if I can just get a contact telephone number…?
Meg:
I’ll give you my mobile number – that’s probably the
best one to use. It’s 04 87 590 122.
Gary:
Got it. OK, then, Meg, what kind of truck are you
interested in?
Meg:
Well, I don’t really know. I’m sorry to be so ignorant!
Gary:
That’s OK. How big is your apartment?
Meg:
Well there’s one bedroom and a living room. My
husband and I are moving to a larger place.
Gary:
OK, so it’s quite small. Well, I’d probably recommend our
5 metre truck. It’s suitable for 3 or more rooms and is
our most popular model.
Meg:
That sounds good, but we haven’t got a lot of money. I’m
looking for the most economical option.
Gary:
OK then. Well, there’s also the 4 metre truck. It’s better
for
a studio apartment, but you could probably fit your
things in it if you haven’t got too much stuff.
Meg:
Well, that one will probably be OK, I think.
Gary:
OK, I’ll put that down in the quote.
Meg:
How much is that one, by the way?
Gary:
It’s $24 an hour.
Meg:
I see. Well, that’s not too bad. I thought it would be at
least $30 and I didn’t want to pay more than $200 for
the day. Does that price include petrol, too?
Gary:
Yes, the truck will have a full tank. But that price doesn’t
include the deposit. That’s $100. But you get that back
when you return the truck.
Meg:
Oh, I see.
Gary:
Now, we do offer some additional optional extras.
Would you like to hear about them?
Meg:
Sure.
Gary:
Well, you can
choose a truck with a tow bar, so you can
tow a trailer with additional items, and we also offer
trucks with air conditioning.
Meg:
Sounds good. I don’t really feel confident about driving
with a trailer, but the air conditioning might be good.
Gary:
Yes, it can get pretty hot here! I’ll put that down then.
Now, you said that you live in Springfield, but where are
you moving to?
Meg:
Our new apartment
is on the other side of town, in
Barkmere.
Gary:
Barkmere? How do you spell that?
Meg:
Oh, it’s B-A-R-K-M-E-R-E.
Gary:
Right. Now we have two branches, so you can pick up
your truck from the city centre or the airport, which ever
you prefer.
Meg:
Well, the airport is very close to Springfield so that
branch would be better for us.
Gary:
OK I’ll put that down. You can decide later where you
want to drop it off. Now, how
long do you need the van
for?
Meg:
Well, we’re not sure how long it will take – probably
about eight hours. Is that OK?
Gary:
Yep, that should be fine.
Meg:
Oh, good. Well, thanks very much for all your help.
Gary:
No problem. Oh, before I let you go, can I just run
through some insurance details?
Meg:
Oh, yes, sure.
Gary:
Now, are you and your husband both planning on
driving the truck?
Meg:
Uh, yes, we might be. Is that a problem?
Gary:
No, it’s no problem. I just need the age of the youngest
driver. That’s an insurance requirement.
Meg:
Oh, well, I’m 28 and my husband’s 29. My younger
brother will be helping us – he’s 18.
Gary:
Oh, well unfortunately he won’t
be able to drive the
truck, as you need to be at least 21 years of age.
Meg:
Oh, I see. Well, put my age down then.
Gary:
Sure. Just one more question – it’s another insurance
requirement – do you and your husband both have
Australian driver’s licences?
Meg:
Well, we’re originally from the U.S., but we both have
licences from here in Australia.
Gary:
Great. Well, that’s all I need from you for now so I’ll be in
touch to confirm your booking.
Meg:
Thank you Gary.
