Cutting an onion is not a very pleasant experience. It may hurt your eyes and make you cry.

When you cut an onion, you break the onion’s parts. Chemicals inside the onion are released. These chemicals react with the water in your eyes. There is a chemical reaction which creates sulphuric acid. Your eyes produce tears, which wash away the acid. A good idea to prevent from this problem is to use a sharp knife. Sharp knives do less damage to the onion’s parts. So fewer chemicals are released. This means that there is less pain in your eyes. It isn’t a good idea to crush an onion because this causes more damage to the parts. More damage means more pain in your eyes. The pain in your eyes doesn’t last long. A cold onion releases fewer chemicals. So before you cut an onion, put it in the freezer for a few minutes. Another idea is to put the onion in water when you cut it. So the chemicals won’t go into the air and so they won’t hurt your eyes.
