Tanzania (formerly
Zanzibar and
Tanganyika ) Zanzibar be-
came a British protectorate in 1890, and Britain received a man-
date for Tanganyika in 1919. The first East African country to
gain independence (1961), its population was over 36 million
in 2002. English was a joint official language with Swahili until
1967, then lost its status as a national language; but it remains
an important medium of communication.

Uganda The Uganda kingdoms were united as a British pro-
tectorate between 1893 and 1903, and the country received its

independence in 1962. Its population was over 24 million in
2002. English is the sole official language, but Swahili is also
widely used as a lingua franca.
