) Zanzibar be-
came a British protectorate in 1890, and Britain received a man-
date for Tanganyika in 1919. The first East African country to
gain independence (1961), its population was over 36 million
in 2002. English was a joint official language with Swahili until
1967, then lost its status as a national language; but it remains
an important medium of communication.

The Uganda kingdoms were united as a British pro-
tectorate between 1893 and 1903, and the country received its

2002. English is the sole official language, but Swahili is also
