ELECTROCARDIOGRAPHY
PRESENTED BY BEENISHARIF
DEFINITION
•Electrocardiography is the process of producing an electrocardiogram, a
recording of the heart's electrical activity. It is an electrogram of the heart
which is a graph of voltage versus time of the electrical activity of the heart
using electrodes placed on the skin.
Work of electrodes
•The electrodes on body which cause the heart to beat. The
signals are shown as waves on an attached computer monitor or
printer.
•These electrodes detect the small electrical changes that are a
consequence ofcardiac muscledepolarizationfollowed
byrepolarizationduring eachcardiac cycle(heartbeat). Changes
in the normal ECG pattern occur in numerous cardiac
abnormalities, including cardiac rhythm disturbances
What is normal ecg
•If the test is normal, it should show thatyour heart is beating
atan even rate of 60 to 100 beats per minute. Many different
heartconditions can show up on an ECG, including a fast, slow,
orabnormal heart rhythm, a heart defect, coronary artery
disease, heart valve disease, or an enlarged heart.
Components of ecg

There are three main components to an ECG: theP wave, which represents
depolarization of the atria; theQRS complex, which represents depolarization
of the ventricles; and theT wave, which represents repolarization of the
ventricles.
Medical Uses of ECG
• ECG can be used to measure the rate and rhythm of heartbeats, the size and
position of theheart chambers, the presence of any damage to the heart's muscle
cells or conduction system, the effects of heart drugs, and the function of
implantedpacemakers. An EKG test is used to find and/or monitor various heart
disorders. These include:
•Irregular heartbeat (known asarrhythmia)
•Blocked arteries
•Heart damage
•Heart failure
•Heart attack. EKGs are often used in the ambulance, emergency room, or other
hospital room to diagnose a suspected heart attack.
You may also need this test when if you
• Have had a heart attack or other heart problems in the past
• Have a family history of heart disease
• Are scheduled forsurgery. Your health care provider may want to check your heart health before the procedure.
• Have apacemaker. The EKG can show how well the device is working.
• Are taking medicine for heart disease. The EKG can show if your medicine is effective, or if you need to makechanges in
your treatment.
General details
•Recording an ECG is a safe and painless procedure. The machines
are powered bymains powerbut they are designed with several
safety features including an earthed (ground) lead. It takes 5 to
10 minutes to complete your test and get computerised results.
•An EKG test is sometimes included in a routine exam for middle-
aged and older adults, as they have a higher risk ofheart disease
thanyounger people
Ecgvs ekg
•An electrocardiogram may be called an EKG or an ECG. Both are
correct and commonly used. EKG is based on the German
spelling, elektrokardiogramm. EKG may be preferred over ECG to
avoid confusion with an EEG, a test that measures brain waves.
