Assessment instrument: Matching Items.According to McCurry , paper and pencil assessments may be an efficient method for assessing factual knowledge. One of such paper and pencil assessment is the use of matching items, which is also known as a variation of the multiple-choice format.

Matching items typically consist of a list of premises and an uneven number of responses that match the premises. Some advantages of using the matching item include reading and responding time for the students is short, while the scoring is easy, objective and reliable. As all the students are scored objectively, the reliability of the assessment results is high . On the contrary, the use of matching item is largely restricted to simple knowledge-based outcomes and the design of the test is susceptible to irrelevant clues, such as having insufficient homogenous responses as plausible options. In addition, Gronlund & Waugh argued that as a selected-response test, it is low in realism and complexity of the task assessed. As such, the validity of the paper and pencil assessment is low. 

Tips in designing Matching Items assessment:


  • Have more responses than premises to reduce the possibility of guesswork by the student

  • Arrange the responses in alphabetical order to avoid any clues due to placement

  • Ensure that both premises and responses are on the same page to prevent the student from being distracted through flipping the pages

  • Indicate the instructions at the start of the assessment to add clarity to the task 5
