A Natural Choice
When Saturday morning rolled around, Josh did not feel like meeting up with Jon, Chad, and Leslie. 
The four of them were best friends and always had a good time together, but today Josh just wanted to be 
alone and take a walk in the woods. There was a nature preserve near his house that he could ride his 
bike to. It was a cool and misty fall day, and Josh figured he would have the place virtually to himself. He 
could walk around, listen to the birds, and enjoy the quietness. There was nothing in particular he wanted 
to think about—he just wanted a timeout from his usual routine. Josh did not feel like talking or joking 
around. It was always fun being with his friends, but it was never quiet. 
Sometimes, it seemed important to just let things soak in. Josh was in school all week, every week, 
with hundreds of other kids. At night, he usually watched television, played video games, or listened to 
music for a while after he ate dinner with his father and finished all of his homework. In the mornings, he 
almost always listened to the radio to help him wake up while he got ready to leave the house. Weekends 
were usually filled with friends, neighbors, relatives, sports, and all kinds of other activities. Josh enjoyed 
spending time with those he loved, and he enjoyed all of the things he was involved with, but it could be 
very tiring. Josh was exhausted and needed time to clear his head.
Josh called his friends and said he would not be showing up to meet them. He told his father where 
he was going and when he would be back, put on his rain jacket, and rode his bike to the woods.
