The Disappearing Lake
When you pull the plug in a filled bathtub, the draining water will create a small whirlpool as the tub 
empties into the pipe below. In 1980, residents on and around Lake Peigneur in Louisiana were horrified to 
see the lake itself mimicking the behavior of bathtub water. Something had gone horribly wrong, and the 
entire lake was draining. But to where?
Lake Peigneur was located on top of a large salt mine. From the topside, an oil company was drilling 
for oil. The drilling crew had calculated that they were far enough away from the salt mine to safely drill, but 
they were wrong. Unfortunately, their 14-inch-wide drill bit pierced the salt mine beneath the bottom of the 
lake, and within hours, the entire lake had disappeared.
Salt dissolves quickly in water, so the freshwater lake rapidly destroyed the structural support in the 
mine as it flooded down from above. Luckily, all of the miners were able to escape before the mine 
collapse truly got out of control. On the surface, the oil drillers were also able to get off their rig before it 
was swallowed by the gaping hole in the bottom of the lake.
Lake Peigneur was about 10 feet deep and covered roughly 1,300 acres prior to the drilling incident. 
During the disaster, 11 nearby barges were sucked into the mine, the canal leading to the Gulf of Mexico 
began to flow backward, and a 150-foot waterfall was created when the earth gave way under the pressure 
of the leaking lake. Buildings, homes, trees, and property were also swallowed whole.
Once the 3.5 billion gallons of water in Lake Peigneur had filled the salt mine completely, nine of the 
eleven barges that had disappeared came back to the surface. The canal refilled the lake, and today it is 
a 1,300-foot-deep saltwater lake—1,290 feet deeper than it was back in 1980. Although there was a huge 
amount of property and land destruction, there were no fatalities from this surreal, man-made disaster.
