How Computers Have Changed Animation
Animation occurs when a series of pictures is displayed quickly in sequence to create the illusion of 
movement. An early example is the flip book, where a figure on each page is drawn in a slightly different 
position. When a person flips the pages in the book from front to back, the figure appears to be moving.
Talented and dedicated artists made traditional animated films and television cartoons by hand. They 
drew thousands of pictures that were animated in two dimensions, or 2D. The first feature-length animated 
movie was 
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,
which was released by Disney in 1937. There were more than 
1,500,000 handmade drawings and paintings that went into the creation of the 2D animation in the film.
Today, many feature-length animated movies are made in 3D, or three dimensions. Images in 3D 
appear to have depth and natural shadow, as if they were filmed. Animators working in 3D require the aid 
of computer technology. Animation that is created with computers is often called CGI, which stands for 
“computer-generated imagery.” This high-tech animation is used for special effects in live-action movies as 
well as in animated cartoons.
To create 3D animation, technical directors first create models of the scenes and characters that 
animators will be using. Computers then help automate specific actions, such as lip movement when a 
character speaks. While the creators of traditionally animated cartoons were very talented artists, 3D 
computer animation requires additional technical skill and computer know-how.
