READ THE PASSAGE
Think about the author’s purpose for writing the passage.
Softball
Laurie thought it was great when Jane Lyons—the news reporter and photographer—showed up at 
her softball game last Saturday. Laurie was very excited about her team’s winning streak and about her 
own role in the victories. Since the team’s first game of the season, Laurie had hit 25 home runs and done 
an outstanding job of guarding second base. During the game that Jane Lyons had covered, Laurie hit two 
home runs! After the game was over, the reporter eagerly peppered Laurie with questions. As Laurie 
thought about the article that would be published a few days later, she was thrilled that her team’s 
picture —and her own name—would be in print. 
Now, a week later, Laurie still felt good about the success, but she was also feeling a lot of pressure. 
After the story was printed, far more people than usual were at the field to see if the team could keep 
winning. Laurie gulped as she remembered boasting to Jane Lyons about her own abilities. She had 
bragged throughout the interview about how good she and the team were. Laurie was mostly joking 
around about her own greatness, but the humor did not come through in the story. As Laurie warmed up 
for the game, she noticed people whispering and pointing at her from the stands.
When it was Laurie’s turn at bat, the other team would be eager to see her humbled. It did not help 
matters that the opposing team was one of the best in the area. Once again, Jane Lyons was at the game, 
so now the pressure was truly on. Laurie took a deep breath and told herself to be calm. She knew deep 
down inside that the most important thing was to simply do the best she could on the field. As she rose 
from the bench, Laurie straightened her back and held her head high. It was time to play.
