Remind students of the 
Author’s Purpose
skill. Say: 
You are going to read a flier for an event at a 
middle school. As you read, think about why the author included each section of the flier.
Then 
remind students of the 
Ask Questions
strategy (Week 6). Say: 
Asking and answering questions 
during reading will help you stay focused. As you read each section of the flier, pause briefly to 
think about any questions you may have.
When students have finished reading, direct them to 
complete the skill practice activity. Review the answers together. Then have partners complete the 
strategy practice activity.
DAY
3
Review the 
Evaluate Evidence
skill with students. Say: 
When an author makes a statement
whether it is an opinion or factual information, he or she should offer evidence that supports 
the statement. As you read, think about what the author is saying. Ask yourself: How did the 
author draw this conclusion? 
Tell students they will read about a place called Taos Pueblo. Then 
remind students of the 
Determine Important Information
strategy. Say: 
Look for statements about 
the history of Taos Pueblo and information that best supports the statements. 
When students 
have finished reading, direct them to complete the skill and strategy practice activities. Review 
the answers together.
