Effective Poster Design
A poster is a great way to advertise any event, from a bake sale to a school play, but not all posters 
are equally effective. Following a few simple guidelines can help you create a poster that will reach your 
target audience and keep people’s attention.
Step 1: Identify your audience and decide what information they need to have about the event you are 
promoting. The name of the event, the location, and the time are essential. You should also consider using 
a “tag line,” which is a single word or phrase that gets your audience to read the rest of the poster. Look for 
intriguing and successful tag lines in magazine advertisements to find examples you can follow.
Step 2: Focus on the visual element. Posters are most effective when the image can be understood 
quickly, so a single image will be more effective than multiple images. For a bake sale, one giant muffin 
will make a stronger statement than a lot of small pictures of breads, pastries, and other baked goods.
Step 3: Balance your text and image in the layout. Placing the image in the center with text above and 
below will give your poster a traditional feeling. An off-center design often attracts more attention. You can 
do this by enlarging your muffin and sliding it to the left so that half of it is off the poster and the text is on 
the right side. If you are using a computer to design the type styles, it is usually better to stick to just one 
font because combining many fonts can create a chaotic and sloppy appearance.
Step 4: Evaluate your poster to make sure it conveys the message you want to send. Then, place your 
poster at an eye-level position—not too high and not too low. You will be sure to attract many viewers if 
they can easily see and read your final product.
