DAY
1
Remind students of the 
Cause and Effect
skill. Say: You can find causes and effects by thinking 
about what happens and why. You are going to read about a lake that disappeared. Think about 
the chain of events that caused the problem in the lake—and what happened as a result. 
Remind students of the 
Ask Questions 
strategy (Week 6). Say: As you read, pause to think about 
any questions you have about the lake disaster. Look for the answers within the passage. When 
students have finished reading, direct them to complete the skill and strategy practice activities. 
Review the answers together.
DAY
2
Remind students of the 
Cause and Effect 
skill. Say: You are going to read a story about a boy who 
discovers the convenience of public transit. Even though a story is fiction, it may contain 
nonfiction cause-and-effect information. Look for causes and effects in both the narrative and 
the information. Then remind students of the 
Make Connections
strategy (Week 2). Say: As you 
read, think about which options for public transit are available in your area. Have students read 
the passage. When students have finished, direct them to complete the skill and strategy practice 
activities. Review the answers together.
DAY
3
Remind students of the 
Prediction 
skill. Say: When reading nonfiction, you can make 
predictions, based on what you read, about things that might happen in the future. Look for 
details within the passage that offer clues about how life might be the same or different in the 
future. Then remind students of the 
Ask Questions
strategy. Say: As you read, think about any
