the Eastern type of 
pronunciation;  2)  the  Southern  type;  3)  the  Western  general 
American  type.  The  Eastern  type 
is  spoken  in  New  England 
(Maine),  N ew   H ampshire,  the  eastern  parts  o f  Verm ont,  M assa­
chusetts,  Connecticut,  Rhode  Island  and  in  a  part  o f the  Atlantic 
sea-board,  i.e.  a  part  of  the  N ew   York  state.  This  type  is  also 
called  Eastern  New  England  speech.  In  New  England  and  in  the 
Boston  State  Am erican  English  have  some  com m on  features  with
