Speech melody  or pitch level is  regarded one  o f the primary 
or  main  components  o f intonation.  Its  chief function  is  to  distin­

T h e   fo u r  fu nction s  o f  inton atio n  (constitutive,  delim itative, 
d istinctiv e  and  recognitive)  are  p erfo rm ed   by  a  nu m b er  o f  pitch 
p attern s  and   th eir distrib utio n  in a sentence.
R.  N a sh   distinguishes  the  follow ing  five  basic  fu nctions  o f 
speech m elody:

)  th e  identity  function,  i.e.  the  ability  o f  listeners  to re c o g ­
n ize  a  lan g u ag e  w ithou t  understan d in g  w h at  is  said  an d   to  p ro ­
no unce u tteran ces  w ith a foreign accent;

)  th e  p resen tation   function,  i.e.  in  ev ery  lan g u a g e   any  u t­
terance is p ro n o u n ced  w ith  som e d eg ree o f  pitch inflection;
(3)  th e  structural  function,  i.e.  th e  speech  m elody  is  used  to 
sign al stru ctu re boundaries  and relatio n sh ips  across  boun daries;
(4)  the  d eictic  function,  i.e.  a  certain  degree  o f   speech   m el­
ody,  in ten tio n ally   altered  by  the  speaker,  is  used  to  e m p h asize  a
