It  should  be  stated  that  New  Y ork city  has  dialect  variations 
o f its  own.  W.  Labov  admits:  «The  structure  of the  sound  system 
o f  N ew   York  is  the  most  am enable  to  quantitative  techniques. 
W ithin  this  system,  the  question  of  structure  can  be  approached 
on  a  num ber  o f  levels  o f  increasing  com plexity»2.  One  o f  the 
m arked  differences  o f  New  York  city  dialect  is  the  usage  o f  (r)
