words,  word-combinations  and  sentences  (phrases);

i.e.  the  phonological  units  serve  to 
distinguish  linguistic  units:  take  /teik/  -   lake  /leik/;  a  nice  house 
/a'nais  haus/  -   an  ice  house  /э п 'ais'haus/;  contract  /'kontraekt/  -  
contract /kan'traekt/.
