W ORD STRESS
L an g u ag es  can  d iffer  w ith  w ord  stress  p lac e m e n t  and  de­
grees  o f it.  A c c o rd in g   to  the  p o sitio n  o f stress  in  w ords  and   w ord 
form s,  w ord  accent  m ay  be  free  (or  shifting)  and  fix ed   (or  co n ­
stant).  A s  to   A .C .  G im son:  «T he  accen tu al  pattern   o f   E n glish 
w ords  is  fix e d ,  in  the  sense  that  the  m ain   a ccen t  alw ays  falls  on  a 
p articu lar sy llab le  o f  any  given  w ord,  b u t free in  the  sense th at the 
m ain  accent  is  n ot  tied   to  any  p articu lar  situ ation   in  the  ch ain  o f 
syllable,  c o n stitu tin g   a  w ord,  as  it  is  in  som e  la n g u a g e s» 1.  Thus, 
w ord  accent  in   E n g lish   m ay  be  reg ard ed   free  if w e  take  all  w ords 
in  w hich  any  sy llable  can  receive  stress.  E.  g.

If  w e  tak e   a  separate  w ord,  it  is  n o ticeab le  th at  stress  re ­
placem en t in  it is  fix e d   and can n o t be  shifted  to  any  oth er sy llable 
o f a  m o n o syllabic,  disyllabic  and  p o ly sy llab ic  w ord.  E.  g.

etc.
W o rd -stress  in R u ssian  is  b oth free  an d sh iftin g  as  it falls  on 
any  sy llable o f  w ords  and  w ord form s  and m ay  sh ift fro m  one  syl­
lable  to  a n o th e r in  d ifferent  g ram m atical  form s  o f  w ords.  E.  g.  го ­
