Self-binding is the term to describe

. I’ve
been a fan of Satel’s work for some time, and here she was using self-binding to emphasize “the vast
role of personal agency in perpetuating the cycle of use and relapse.” But I disagree with the basic
premise of this article, which argues that our ability to self-bind refutes the disease model of addiction.
For me, our need to self-bind speaks to the powerful pull of addiction and the brain changes that go
along with it, consistent with the disease model. Economist Thomas Schelling also addresses the concept
of self-binding, but calls it “self-management” and “self-command”: “Self-Command in Practice, in
