pity. My beautiful Henry Moore…” [Dahl, 1991: 558].

И тут произошла вовсе ужасающая вещь: пытаясь помочь своей жене, сэр Бэзил 
попросту отрубил ей голову:

Хладнокровию сэра Бэзила можно только позавидовать, это можно понять 
по тому, как автор описывает тембр его голоса – Sir Basil’s voice even softer than 
usual. Можно только догадываться, что произошло с бедной миссис Тернтон: 
прилагательные terrible ashy grey, причастия opening, shutting, gurgling sound 
рисуют перед читателем ужасную картину: несчастной просто отрубили голову. 
Концовка рассказа и вовсе впечатляет своей абсурдностью. Обнаружив, 
что пила слишком опасна, сэр Бэзил попросил у Джелкса топор, дабы 
продолжить «освобождать» жену. 
Не менее динамичный сюжет разворачивается в рассказе “Lamb to the 
Slaughter”, в котором речь идёт о молодой семейной паре. Действие происходит 
вечером в доме четы Мелони, когда жена ожидает мужа со службы. Идиллия 
семейного вечера рушится, когда приходит муж. Он сообщает беременной жене, 
что уходит к другой. Между супругами происходит неприятный разговор, после 
чего Мери хладнокровно убивает своего мужа замороженной бараньей ногой, 
которую она собиралась приготовить на ужин: 
“I’ll get the supper,” she managed to whisper, and this time he didn’t stop her. 
…Everything was automatic now – down the stairs to the cellar, the light switch, 
the deep freeze, the hand inside the cabinet taking hold of the first object it met. She 
lifted it out, and looked at it. It was wrapped in paper, so she took off the paper and 
looked at it again.

…She carried it upstairs, holding the thin bone-end of it with both her hands, 
and as she went through the living-room, she saw him standing over by the window 
with his back to her, and she stopped… 
With that point, Mary Malony simply walked up behind him and without any 
pause she swung the big frozen leg of lamb high in the air and brought it down as hard 
as she could on the back of his head. [Dahl, 1991: 456-457].
