Descendants of William MCJUNKIN
William McJunkin is found in Union Co., S.C. from 1775 until 1799. Many sites on the internet list him as the son of Robert McJunkin and Margaret Caldwell and show him born about 1720. I do not believe this to be correct. The earliest records found of him are his service records in the later part of the Revolution. Records show he served 415 days in the militia from 7 May 1780 until 25 June 1782. There are land records for him in 1784 and 1792 in the Brown’s Creek area. The 1790 census show William with 1 male over 16 (William), 1 male under 16 (son Aquilla b 1788), 3 females ( wife Mary and 2 daughters) and 1 other free person(?). On 25 Sept. 1786 he asks that an indent in his name be given to Elias Hollingsworth for militia service and on 18 January 1787 he asks that an indent be given to Samuel McJunkin for a horse he lost in service. William wrote a will on 25 Jan. 1799. It mentions wife Mary and sons Aquilla and Lott. On 1 May 1799 the court asks William Kennedy and Thomas Brandon to inventory his estate. Mary is on the census records for 1800 and 1810 and these place her birth between 1765 and 1770. Mary died in 1819 and left a will which names her children. Now the questions If William was born in 1720 would he be serving in the militia in 1782 at age 62, possible but doubtful. The oldest son Aquilla was born in 1788 making William 68 years old then and 75 + years when his last child was born. Would he have married a woman 45 years younger than him? Facts don’t fit him being the son of Robert McJunkin born in 1680 in Scotland. There are other McJunkin’s in Union Co. during this period Joseph, Samuel and Daniel. I think all are related to William but not sure how. Elias Hollingsworth I believe is Mary’s father.

OBITUARY of R.H. McJUNKIN
At about seven o'clock last Tuesday evening 'Taps' sounded for R.H. McJunkin, one of the most familiar figures on our streets and one who has been identified with the building and progress of the town for thirty seven years. Several years ago he retired from business since which time he has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Lottie Brown, and her son Robert was, outside school hours, the faithful and almost constant companion of Mr. McJunkin. Between the grandson and grandfather there was a very strong bond of affection which was often commented on by their friends.
While Mr. McJunkin had been growing feeble for some time he was sick but one week and few had thought that he would not recover. He will be missed by our citizens, especially by his cronies, his comrades in arms, but few of whom remain, but most of all he will be missed by the daughter and grandson who loved him so devotedly and cared for him so tenderly. In the dark days of 1861 when the country so sadly needed men to 'preserve the Union' R.H. McJunkin was one of the very first to answer the call to arms, volunteering at Pekin, Illinois, being assigned to Co. F of the 11th Illinois Volunteer Infantry and serving thru the war. After being mustered out he enlisted and served for two years on the Red River in Texas. The play is over, the curtain has dropped and closed over his life and a good soldier, a devoted husband, a loving father, a true friend, an honest man and a Christian has gone to his reward.
Robert Henry McJunkin was born in Springfield, Indiana, May 18, 1840, and died at Farmington, New Mexico, March 13, 1928. He was married to Rebecca Roberts on Christmas day 1866 and to them were born eleven children eight of whom survive. These are Elton, Mrs. Charlotee Brown, Bert, U.G. (Jake), Mrs. Jessie Johnson, Mrs. Kate Estes, Ralph, and James. He is also survived by twenty two grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Mrs. McJunkin passed away about seventeen years ago and a daughter, Lucy, Mrs. Frank Hoff, who was well known to Farmington people, about five years later. Mr. McJunkin had been a Methodist nearly all his life and his funeral was held at the Methodist church of Farmington Friday afternoon.
The church was filled by friends of the family and services were in charge of Wilbur F. Pierce Post of the American Legion, a very large number of members being present, with the Boy Scouts attending in a body. Rev. C.J. Chappell conducted the service and a quartet composed of Mesdames A.M. Amaden and G. C. Bero and Messers. E.P. Woods and C.P. Vorhees with Mrs. C.J. Chappell at the piano sang 'Beautiful Isle of Somewhere,' 'Lead Kindly Light,' and 'Gathering Home'. Rev. Chappell read the lesson from the 15th chapter of Corinthians and used the first 3 verses of the 14th chapter of St. John for his text. The short sermon carried words of sympathy to the sorrowing ones were laying away a beloved father and messages of hope to them and all others who heard it. There were many beautiful floral offerings. A 'guard of honor' was formed by H.A. Dean, H.M. Gibson and G.W.R. Hoy who stood at attention beside the silver colored metal casket thruout the service. The bearers were Fred Barret and Leo Lampton, veterans of the Spanish-American War, Clarence Carrier, Fred Hartman, Lewis Moore and Ed Powell, all members of the Legion. At Greenlawn cemetery where he was laid beside his wife the firing squad fired the salute to the dead and bugler H.A. Dean blew 'taps'.
Those who came from a distance to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Johnson, Bert McJunkin and son Clinton, U.G. McJunkin, all from Phoenix, Mrs. Kate Estes of Marcola, Oregon, Elton McJunkin of Silverton, Mr. and Mrs. James McJunkin of Teese To, Arizona, and Harry, son of U.G., who is attending Ft. Lewis college.

Obituary of Alfred McJunkin
Alfred McJunkin, son of Landlot and Eliza McJunkin, was born in Montgomery county, Indiana, Jan. 15, 1845, died Aug. 11, 1896, aged 51 years six months and 27 days. He was the youngest child of ten children, seven sons and three daughters, six of whom survive him. He was left an orphan in early childhood and was fostered in the home of John H. Compton, who gave him parental protection and care, where he remained until the civil war broke out, when on July 13, 1863, at Indianapolis, he enlisted in Co. G, 63rd Indiana Infantry and served to the close of the war. In 1865 he was transfered to Co. E, 128 Ind Regiment, which was retained to guard guard the war supplies until sold. On April 13, 1866 he received his discharge at Raleigh, N.C., and returned to the home of his foster parents, where he remained for a short time and then went West, finally locating in Iowa where in Keokuk county Dec. 20, 1877, he was married to Emma M. Miller and to them were born three children, Mary Elizabeth, John Arthur and Sarah Jane. In 1879 he moved from Iowa to Smith county, Kansas, where for four years he endured the privations of Western life and driven at the time to almost destitute circumstances by drought until in March 1884, he removed with his little family to Indiana and settled on the farm of his foster father where he has ever since resided. He united with the Disciples of Christ at Antioch church near Fremont, Ill., January 1, 1869. He was a member in good standing and when in health was always in attendance at services in Gods house. For the past year he was a sufferer from cancer on the face. He bore his affliction patiently, never murmuring at his lot. He was conscious to the last but weakened by prolonged sickness was unable to speak. All was done that could be to make him comfortable. Neighbors and friends alike showed their love and respect in visiting him during his illness and their kindness was appreciated by him and his family. He leaves to mourn his loss a campanion and three children, two sisters, one living in Missouri and one in Kansas, four brothers, one living in Illinois, one in Iowa, one in Colorado and one in Kansas. Thus another one has been called from our midst but God knows best and He who can temper the winds to the shorn lamb, can help those who put their trust in him to bear the burden of sorrow and we can only look to him and trust until he sees fit to reunite the family circle in heaven.
One less at home, one more in heaven
But God knows what is best.
He took him from this world of woe,
That he might rest with him.

To whom it may concern --I extened my heartfelt thanks to the friends and neighbors for their kindness toward my brother through his sickness and death.

Ignacio East Cemetery, Ignacio, Colorado
Ulysses Grant McJunkin born November 4, 1881 - died February 5, 1977 in El Paso, Texas.
Funeral services were Thursday, February 10, from the Ignacio Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Don Kratz officiating. Burial was in the Ignacio Cemetery.
Jake, as he was better known from the time he was a small boy, spent his 95 years in many areas and in many occupations.
Recalling when he was in first grade in school in Saguache he told how the McJunkin family came across the plains in a covered wagon. He admitted to being scared at night when he heard the coyotes.
He had lifelong interest in music and played the violin and guitar. He said he remembered his mother saying, "Jake, I wish you would stop plunking away on that guitar, you are about to drive me crazy".
In his early years around this area he played his fiddle at the county dances and his wife, Ruby, corded on the Piano. He was still playing for his own entertainment in his 80s. When Chrestino Casias another old time musician, came to see him the two played for hours at a time
As a young man he freighted across the Navajo reservation, helped survey for a railroad in Arizona and was in the Silverton-Ouray area when the mining days were at their height, before he was out of his teens. An older brother, Elton,. freighted supplies from Silverton across Engineer Mountain to Lake City.
From the Ignacio Chieftain for July 19, 1966 – Mr. McJunkin recalled he married Ruby Bryan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. W. (George Washington) Bryan at the Bryan home which was across from the present Don Gosney ranch. The Bryans and MoJunkin were around before there were any houses in what is now down town Ignacio.
In 1909 the Bryan store was located on the south side of the depot and at a later date Mr. Bryan built his store down towns (corner of Pioneer and Goddard). Mr. Bryan also built many of the present day homes in Ignacio.
The McJunkins lived in Durango following their marriage. Mr. McJunkin thought it was probably July 4, 1909 that they and the Len Andersons cane out from Durango on the train for the sale of lots as the land had just been thrown open for settlement.
So this 4th of July a 30 or 40 piece band from Pagosa played for the celebration and there were eats and speeches before the sale was to began, However, around noon lightning, rain and hail and so cold it turned to snow. As the snow piled up the people took off and headed for their homes and not a lot was sold.
Some four years later the McJunkins did more to Ignacio. Mr. MoJunkin ran sheep, then started in a Second Hand store business later adding groceries and dry goods. After a number of years in one location they bought the stor and the business which they operated until selling to Harold Phillips. They had three sons George, Grant and Harry.
The McJunkins in later years lived in the family Bryan home on Browning where Ed Mouser now lives.
After Mrs. McJunkin's death Mr. McJunkin continued to live here during the summers in the house just north of his former home. In the winter he was with his son Harry in El Paso or his brother, Jim, at his trading post near Winslow, Arizona.
He painted a good many pictures in his later years., mostly from memory of Navajoland and early day scenes. He hung these pictures on the walls of his home for his own pleasure.' He did not like winter scenes, so he seldom painted bare trees, ice or snow.
