Kunya Ark, which means "Old castle" - a citadel that serve d as a residence for the khans of Khiva. History of the addition of the citadel - is to some extent the history of most of Khiva. Now, however, in the Kunya Ark survived only a few buildings of the XIX century. But on the territory of arch there are only a few buildings relating to the XIX century. In the Arch, along with housing khans and courtiers, state institutions were kurynyshhana - reception (salamhana, arzhana - places of welcome, analysis of complaints and applications), mint, summer and winter mosques, harem, an armory, a workshop for the manufacture of bullets and shells, a warehouse, a kitchen, a stable, a dungeon and a special area for sheep combat.
The term Kun-Ark came into use after construction in the years 1832-38 in the city of one more such palace Tash-Hauli. According to its the structure, it resembles a fortress within the fortress. One of its sides is by the walls of Ichan-Kala and the other remains specially erected walls. The Kunja-Ark can be accessed only from one side to the eastern gate. Its territory covers an area of more than 1 hectare, it is constructed in the form of a quadrilateral (123*93 meters) and is surrounded by a massive wall. Kunya-Ark consists of four large and small courtyards. Special corridors between the courts are there. In the past, the top of the towers of the entrance gate Kunya-ark were dome-shaped cells (kafasa), made of thin wire. A series of small arches of the gate is connected to the walls, located on both sides. The Harem and houses belonging to the khan’s family are located in the northern part of the palace. It’s difficult to determine the location of several destroyed buildings, but the buildings that still exist such as reception office, winter and summer mosques, mint and harem give us the imagine of its structure.
